This axe with an unidentified tool can be found twice on a French “Compagnonnage” “tableau” from 1848.

Feddersen (F/2) says that the image comes from a German book about the Compagnonnage (Winkelmüller Les Compagnonnages, Hamburg 1967). I have a book about the Compagnonnage (The Artisans and Guilds of France (2000) by François Icher). In it is a colour version of the image and the information says: “Painting by Paulin, painter-glazier-gilder, 1848, edeline collection. Image commemorating the reception of Tourangeau Coeur Zélé (Zealous Heart from Touraine) as a journeyman sabot maker of the devoir in Nantes.”
